Armor Sets
Gear (specifically sets) in WAR is classified into "Grades". Each of the 5 pieces of armor in these sets (Helm, Chest, Shoulders, Gloves, Boots) provides a 10% reduction in incoming damage in specific encounters, and provides 10% bonus in damage against the mob in those encounters. As this is on a per-item basis rather than a function of the set, you can mix and match between the sets of equivalent Grade to get up to the maximum 50%. However, the set bonuses require the pieces from their own set, so 3 Bloodlord and 2 Annihilator will only get you up to the 3- and 2- piece bonuses respectively but will still give you the 50% Wards.
Each Ward protects you in the encounters required to acquire the next Grade of gear (and thus the next Ward) and also provides the benefits of any of the Wards of lower level, so you don't have to keep your Grade 5 gear in order to do Fortresses once you have your Grade 6 gear.
1.05 News:
In addition to reducing the amount of damage received from high-level encounter NPCs, each Ward on high-level armor set pieces worn will now affect the amount of damage players are able to do to those NPCs. Players not wearing any pieces of the appropriate armor set will see their damage greatly reduced. For each piece of the appropriate armor a player wears, their damage against the boss monster will increase.

Bloodlord Armor Set from Bastion Stair

Annihilator Armor Set from Tier 4 RvR
Boots: Dropped from players (scenarios and open world RvR(?)); Gloves: Bought from the renown vendor; Shoulders, helm, chest: Gold loot bags from keep captures

Greater Ward - Grade 6
Sentinel Armor Set from City High Level Dungeons (Bilerot Burrow and Bloodwrought Enclave)

Superior Ward - Grade 7

At level 37, there are three "epic" quest lines that reward players with weapons that have proc effects on them. However, the proc effect is not listed on the item description (Yay Mythic!)
